In 1897 the Dutch Royal Navy deployed two of the world’s largest steamwalkers into the Artic, in an effort to reach the magnetic North Pole. The Dutch-built “Buffel” and “Mammoet” demonstrated considerable improvements on the British Mk1 Mechanized Walkers marrekie.deviantart.com/art/Me… , featuring better stability and maneuverability, higher cruising speeds and a considerable payload capacity. The steam expedition reached the North Pole on August 22nd 1897, beating the British Royal Navy to the punch by five months.
