Far From Home by Marrekie Far From Home by Marrekie
June 2008: This week, my very first 3D-model ever has busted through the ‘magical 100 faves barrier’! When I fired up Google Sketchup for the first time and started working on this grey box that later became the FDC-307, I never guessed that I would reach this milestone. Thank you all!

I wanted to mark this, so I made an image of the ol’ bucket in formation with a close relative, the CSC-002 (a variation on the basic design I personally always liked more, but hey… I’m not complaining =D ).

Are we including in the "victims of WWII" the civilians in Nagasaki & Hiroshima too?

Anyway I think you missed my point or I didn't write it well enough - EVERY country has done something horrible against its own or others, whether in war or during supposed 'peace'. Don't trick yourself into thinking one country has some magical wholesomeness over another.

I'm Australia and have enough family and friends with family history of fighting against the Axis or been abused by it. In case it helps.

But anyway - come on - your avatar is the Robotech Defense Force insignia (originally Macross made by the Japanese) - the ships above are just as fictional :) Japans only mecha is a full sized fake gundam =) US bases in Japan (50,000 troops?) are largely payed for by the Japanese. Which is incredible, they pay to be occupied :) Just crazy.

Marrekie, love your ships - if you need to censor these off topic response I'll completely understand.

Actually, I was talking about the victims of Japanese atrocities. Even to this day, very few have forgiven the Japanese for it.

Doubt they ever will either. Well to those that actually committed atrocities and of course the government, current & present. But a harder thing to lay blame on a whole people.

But again, each nation, sometime in its past, has something to be shameful about.. that's bad enough but its when a nations government is hypocritical in its finger pointing at other is truly humorous (or vomit inducing for some I'm sure :)

Anyway, if Japan ever did go to war again in the future with either the supposed 'good' or 'bad' side, depending on which propaganda your listening to, I'd imagine the last thing on their mind would be creating new atrocities to shame them for 50+ years (or at the least they'd be covering it up more this time like any other nation's government would) heh.. just a realist :(

Ok this has gotten all depressing - LOVE THE SHIP! :)

It similar with mine, if you see it in a blink of eye, but more bite on it. And the cannon-like is more stunning, at least for me, design.

I learn from this and made better ship in the future :XD:

Very neat models and setting! Look quite realistic, actually!
I would question what render you used, but I have no idea how "rendering" in SketchUp works xD
All the same, great work!

Oh, man this is awesome. Seeing the two side-by-side really adds a whole 'nother level of sci-fi goodness to it (pardon the vague complement here, but I'm finding myself at a loss for better words - sorry >_>;).

How is Sketch Up, by the way? Would you say it's comparable to AutoDesk's 3DS?

Thanks for the compliment & fave my man. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with 3DS, so I couldn't say whether it's comparable.

Hey, very nice work -- particularly for a first model. Ever think of switching to something more powerful than SketchUp? Other good freeware programs include Blender, Wings 3D, and Truespace. I'm very interested to see what you could do with the right tools.

You can download the program for free. There are some good tutorials on the Google Sketchup site, which allow you to get familiar with the basics. It's pretty intuitive mate, after a few hours of fiddling you're already able to design something.
