A Bright Future by Marrekie A Bright Future by Marrekie
Concept design of a near future interplanetary spacecraft. I tried to achieve an acceptable level of realism by applying my own, limited understanding of spaceflight principles and by extensively tapping into the almighty web (e.g. Atomicrocket). I’m an aviation engineer though and most definitely not a rocket scientist, so feel free to let me know when I’m talking out of my ass here.

Since this ship is meant for mining, I wonder exactly what kind of processing is capable for the extracted raw material.  Would most refinement take place on a colony or Earth?  I don't even know what kind of energy needs it would have.

If raw goods are refined elsewhere, there must be fairly regular supply to it when it is in operation around the Asteroid Belt.  That ship could bring fuel and whatever else, then load up whatever raw material was mined.  I'd be interested in seeing that transport.  It may need more speed for its purposes than this ship does, which may translate into solar sails, ion propulsion, or rocket drives with more fuel.  That wouldn't be a problem for space as much in the transport with a smaller crew, though.

Wow. I've studied these things for years and she's a real beauty! Gorgeous! One thing I have to ask though, is I'm guessing your mass ratio (propellant to empty mass) is rather low because the NTR's provide such a great specific impulse and the missions are fairly low delta-velocity?

Hey there, thanks for the positive comment. You're right, considering the used type of propulsion and the intended mission profile, a relatively low mass ratio should be sufficient.

The near future will see deep space craft as essentially space stations with rockets attached to them.

Marrekie, I have been a great fan of your Saddling Up pic for awhile and I was browsing today and now found this! Amazing! Would you mind if I made some line drawings of these? I would provide you the pics and credit you of course. I am glad to see you have the same intermodel containers, it makes it easy to scale the two vessels!

I'm glad you like this design! As long as you credit me, I'm okay with your suggestion to do some line drawings. I'd love to see the end result! :)

Interesting design dude it looks like it's flyable other than some docking issues it's a beautiful design dude

owww that's one of a nice interplanetary ship ! very lovly level of details. but i see some babylon 5 influence (solarpanels) :P

one question: do you mind if i use this picture as a reference to build an interplanetary ship in the game "Kerbal Space programm" ? it wouldn't be 100% accurate to your picture, 'cause of the limitations of the game, but it would be doable. alraeady have a crewferry like yours and some smal plans ... but yours ... well going to Mars in styl i guess :D

okay, but it will take a while, i have to construct the ship in orbit and have to figure out how to design all the different pieces :D

an aviation engineer...and now your hoping a rockets scientist comes allong 2rate it? :D
often i dont like those lines in sketchup, cause when u turn them off, a lot of detail gets lost, but in this case, they give it a cartoon style look which is cool, now im only a sound engineer but looks convincing 2 me:headbang:

It does carry a strong sense of realism, at the very least it'd be more plausible than the typical sci-fi/movie design.

Its a very plausible design if humanity can collectively get its arse together and focus on the level of investment in space exploration within this decade as was the case in the 60's and most importantly carry on the momentum beyond merely planting flags.

Is there any chances to have other views of that wonder? :D I want to see the naked trusses assembly, i want to see the rotating habitats, i want to see close-up views of the MCRV, and their docking ports, i want to see everything of it!!! :D

Also, since you're interested in Orion propulsion as well, you may want to give a look at this: [link], aside from the unpleasant military purpose of the thing, it makes me quite astonished at the dimensions of the ship engineers thought plausible back in the 60s

This makes me remember that we should already be in the space age (I don't think we're actually in the space age yet as we have no off-world colonies). This is the reason why we should already be in the space age and this was over 50 years ago: [link](nuclear_propulsion)

The orion design always fascinated me. I never figured out though how they were planning to launch the thing from Earth without leaving it in total nuclear ruins.

if you look up how much nukes were detonated for testing purposes it doesn't look that bad.

Problem is if the craft itself would survive it.

Thankfully we can hope in fusion pulse engines ala Daedalus.

No, braking is done by turning the entire ship around.
